The GVWR ( gross vehicle weight rating) of the 2018 F-150 ranges between 6,100 to 7,050 lbs and the payload capacity ranges between 1,485 to 2,311 lbs. How do you calculate the GVWR and the payload capacity of your truck? Let’s talk about it down below.
What is GVWR?
The gross vehicle weight rating is total amount of weight of your truck can carry. Includes the weight of the vehicle itself, all the necessary fluids for operation (transmission fluid, gas, oil etc.) as well as any cargo and passengers. GVWR is calculated by the manufacturer through rigorous testing. This information is located in your owner’s manual.
What is curb weight?
Curb weight is how much your truck weighs on its own without any passengers or cargo. This measurement includes a full tank of gas and any other fluids that are needed to keep your vehicle functioning properly. This information can be determined by having your truck weighed, or contacting your vehicle’s manufacturer.
What is payload capacity?
The payload capacity is total amount of stuff your truck can carry. Payload capacity can be simply calculated by subtracting curb weight from GVWR. For example, your truck’s GVWR is 6100 lbs and your truck’s curb weight is 4110 lbs. Its load capacity would be 1990 lbs. This is the weight your truck can safely carry.
What are other factors to my GVWR and Payload Capacity?
Other factors that affect GVWR and payload capacity are engine types, cab type, and wheelbase. As each engine weighs differently and yields varying horsepower. Having the correct wheelbase on the chassis in the properly place will ensure that the weight is distributed safely. Cab types factor as different sizes affect the curb weight overall.
